Cleaning - Paint removal of metal parts
Cleaning is the removal of coatings (including powder coating, cataphoresis paint (KTL) and Teflon coating) from various materials. This includes hanging tools for painting installations, incorrectly painted parts and repair of damaged/outdated coatings.
The cleaning of metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminium can be done in two ways, namely thermal and chemical.
Thermal cleaning
A suitable process for the coating of metals that are able to resist higher temperatures is cleaning by pyrolysis. After treatment in pyrolysis furnaces, the treated materials can be post-treated by spraying them with heated water under high pressure. However, the materials are not yet ready to be varnished. For this, the materials can still be blasted (for example, shot blasting, bead blasting or blasting with nut shells) or pickling. If pickled, the carbon steel is also immersed in an oil emulsion to temporarly preserve the product against rust.
Pyrolysis is also a suitable process for cracking teflon coatings (for example baking trays) or cracking a zinc layer. This latter is mainly applied to fences that are de-galvanized and re-galvanized.
Chemical cleaning
This process is often used with metals such as aluminium, galavanized steel and stainless steel because this happens at lower temperatures (from 80°C), so that these metals are not damaged. In this process, the product is immersed in a bath with chemicals, after which it stays in it for 1 to 48 hours, depending on the chemistry used and also on the composition of the coating.
Unlike the pyrolysis process which can be used for serveral applications, these chemicals each have their own cleaning and paint removal properties.
Here too, carbon steel must be preserved afterwards with an oil emulsion against rusting.
